During her many interviews for the recent release of Kairos, White Hinterland’s Casey Dienel often sang the praises of her contemporaries at the edges of bedroom electro-pop (see: Toro Y Moi, Beach House). Her recent take on Neon Indians’ “6669 (I don’t know if you know)” is a bit more dark and sinuous than anything we’ve heard from that circle of artists, and perhaps more in line with the gritty, minimal dubstep of Pantha du Prince. “Decidedly unchillwave,” declared Gorilla vs. Bear in their recent post of the track. We agree. The disco spirit of the original remains, but dipped in some serious, gooey mysteriousness.
Portlanders, the next live appearance from White Hinterland will be Saturday, July 25 at PDX’s Doug Fir, sharing a stage with Bear In Heaven and Twin Sister. THAT’S a solid bill, ye music fans.
Like the subtly deep, slowburn dream-pop R&B found on the album, WHITE HINTERLAND’S Kairos has calmly, cooly been winning over hearts of music fan and critic alike. It seems with each day, a new champion of Kairos steps forward. NPR selected Kairos’ opener “Icarus” as its Song of the Day, saying of the jam: “It’s hypnagogic, certainly, but also transformative — these are the sort of reveries that can feed an appetite for wanderlust or make listeners ache for home, depending on the context.”
Meanwhile, in an interview with Casey Dienel, Venus Zine called Kairos “the most contemporary thing that you will hear all year…The influences are apparent, but not overwrought—and the album as a whole sounds complete and definitively unique.”
And lovely remixes of the album have been popping up like Spring lilies in our inboxes. But none have quite captured our hearts like that of NYC electronic artist Alan Wilkis, whose Stereolab-hinting reimagining of Kairos standout “No Logic” fills the originally sparse, jerky-dub track with a chirpy bounce and warm synth melodies. Today you can bring WHITE HINTERLAND’S Kairos into your own home on CD or LP! The latest from Casey Dienel and Shawn Creeden is now available at your favorite local record shop or via Dead Oceans mail order HERE.
Appropriately enough, Stereogum premiered the album’s first video today with “Amsterdam.” Watch the animated video by Michaela Copikova below.
In January, we introduced you to a wholly new sound from WHITE HINTERLAND, a progressive, washy R&B, with a playful, dubby backbone. T’was no fluke, fellow music enthusiast. With Kairos, Casey Dienel and musical partner Shawn Creeden have gracefully dived headlong into a pool of gorgeous, cerebral, danceable sounds.
The latest taster jam from Kairos is “No Logic,” which, as Gorilla vs. Bear said today, is “further evidence of Casey Dienel’s unexpected but seamless transformation into seductive minimal R&B/pop star.” And believe it or not, the herky-jerky-dub of “No Logic” is actually built around an acid-fried ukulele melody. Listen close and you’ll hear it in there. And soon, you will be able to see the live construction of the song, as White Hinterland heads out on a North American tour with Dosh, who will be in support of his own wicked new record.
