White Hinterland

Freedom often begins from terror, and White Hinterland's third album, Baby, addresses the fear that comes along with breaking out of established rituals, or leaving a comfortable place, and striking out into the unknown. Four years after her profile-raising release, Kairos (2010), Casey Dienel aka White Hinterland has taken the gloves off and knuckled down to produce a deep, dark, heady mix of songs. After two and a half years of writing and recording material in Montreal and Portland, OR, Dienel moved back in to her family home in Scituate, MA. There she forged a new aesthetic, spending five months building her own studio, The Glades, in her parents' basement - the same space where she practiced piano and vocal lessons as a child. Determined to helm her new album, Dienel spent months studying production, poring over YouTube tutorials about Protools, mic'ing techniques and other minutiae. Armed with this self-taught skill and her new studio, Dienel set forth to subvert the existing power structure of male producer as svengali and female artist as figurehead (see: Billy Corgan/Courtney Love, Timbaland/Aaliyah, Phil Spector/The Ronettes). She created her own, new path on Baby, which showcases her as a singer/songwriter/producer who has only become bolder and more resolute over the past three-plus years. Calling in her friends as pinch hitters, Dienel worked acclaimed musicians Sean Carey (Bon Iver, S. Carey), Neal Morgan (Joanna Newsom, Bill Callahan), and Cole Kamen-Green (Beyoncé).

Watch New White Hinterland Video for “No Logic”

NoLogic

This weekend, Gorilla VS. Bear premiered the new White Hinterland video for “No Logic,” directed by Solomon Chase. It was filmed on a Spring evening in the woods of North Carolina. Shot in infrared, the video is a stunning black and white interplay that reveals Casey Dienel and Shawn Creeden amidst wandering forest creatures of the night. Its eerie, enigmatic and electrifying! But you really just gotta see for yourself.

White Hinterland are playing at Holocene for Portland’s MusicfestNW on September 10th. You can buy your tickets right here!

White Hinterland Dips Neon Indian’s Glo-Fi In Some Lovely, Gooey Mystery

whitehinterland-575x431

During her many interviews for the recent release of Kairos, White Hinterland’s Casey Dienel often sang the praises of her contemporaries at the edges of bedroom electro-pop (see: Toro Y Moi, Beach House). Her recent take on Neon Indians’ “6669 (I don’t know if you know)” is a bit more dark and sinuous than anything we’ve heard from that circle of artists, and perhaps more in line with the gritty, minimal dubstep of Pantha du Prince. “Decidedly unchillwave,” declared Gorilla vs. Bear in their recent post of the track. We agree. The disco spirit of the original remains, but dipped in some serious, gooey mysteriousness.

Portlanders, the next live appearance from White Hinterland will be Saturday, July 25 at PDX’s Doug Fir, sharing a stage with Bear In Heaven and Twin Sister. THAT’S a solid bill, ye music fans.
