Today you can bring WHITE HINTERLAND’S Kairos into your own home on CD or LP! The latest from Casey Dienel and Shawn Creeden is now available at your favorite local record shop or via Dead Oceans mail order HERE.
Appropriately enough, Stereogum premiered the album’s first video today with “Amsterdam.” Watch the animated video by Michaela Copikova below.
In January, we introduced you to a wholly new sound from WHITE HINTERLAND, a progressive, washy R&B, with a playful, dubby backbone. T’was no fluke, fellow music enthusiast. With Kairos, Casey Dienel and musical partner Shawn Creeden have gracefully dived headlong into a pool of gorgeous, cerebral, danceable sounds.
The latest taster jam from Kairos is “No Logic,” which, as Gorilla vs. Bear said today, is “further evidence of Casey Dienel’s unexpected but seamless transformation into seductive minimal R&B/pop star.” And believe it or not, the herky-jerky-dub of “No Logic” is actually built around an acid-fried ukulele melody. Listen close and you’ll hear it in there. And soon, you will be able to see the live construction of the song, as White Hinterland heads out on a North American tour with Dosh, who will be in support of his own wicked new record.

The evolution of WHITE HINTERLAND’s music has been graceful and inspiring, shifting chameleon-like from jazz-tinged chamber-pop to French ye-ye music. Now, with the March 9 release of Kairos (March 8 in the UK), White Hinterland delves into a modern, electronic wash and uncovers a confident, captivating pop voice. And we just feel a little blessed to be along for the ride. Please join us.
Longtime White Hinterland supporter Gorilla Vs. Bear premiered Kairos opener “Icarus” today, saying, “the new record finds Casey Dienel eschewing the jazzier/folk steez of her earlier work in favor of spectral, slinky modern R&B and minimal pop…On the surface, a dramatic shift, but Kairos feels like an undeniably graceful, surprisingly natural step up. ’Icarus’ is the album’s ethereal, spooky/sexy opening track.”

Spring tour dates will be announced soon.
Straight off WHITE HINTERLAND’S tour-exclusive EP Fresh From the Garden, we bring you a couple of new covers. The first, a ethereal take on Justin Timberlake’s “My Love” is available HERE. For the second track Casey Dienel takes on Arthur Russell’s “Lucky Cloud.” Here’s what Trip Wire had to say about her version: “A lucid homage to a teacher who did more for Dienel than any professor, ‘Lucky Cloud’ is a rare example of a cover reaching the same heights as the original, to the point where it almost feels like Russell remixed the track himself.” Listen to “Lucky Cloud” HERE.
