The Tallest Man on Earth

Kristian Matsson, aka the Tallest Man on Earth, is a 29-year-old songwriter from Dalarna, Sweden. The first recordings from the Tallest Man on Earth surfaced in 2006 via a self-titled EP released on the Swedish independent label Gravitation. Matsson followed this EP with his 2008 full length, Shallow Grave, an album that drew accolades from the likes of NPR and Pitchfork. Many in North America were introduced to the Tallest Man on Earth on a tour with Bon Iver, including a stop for two shows at the legendary New York City venue Town Hall. The Tallest Man on Earth was winning over audiences through powerful performances, taking the stage alone with his acoustic guitar and captivating the crowds night after night.

NEW VIDEO // The Tallest Man On Earth Shares Beautiful “Short Film About Dark Bird Is Home,” New Tour Dates

The Guardian described The Tallest Man on Earth’s critically acclaimed album The Dark Bird is Home as “more than usually opaque”; with lyrics that allude to personal struggles. The recording of the album lent itself to create music that felt raw and meaningful and today we’re happy to share a short film on the process, directed by Dan Huiting and Lauren Josephine.

Recorded in Kristian Matsson’s native Sweden, we get a glimpse of the beautiful backdrop that was integral to the album’s creation, with Matsson poetically narrating in both Swedish and English parts, as well as a peak into the rustic, simple cabin-come-recording studio that birthed the latest album.

This June, The Tallest Man on Earth will embark on a US tour followed by his biggest European show to date, London’s legendary Royal Albert Hall. Full list of dates below.

WATCH // The Tallest Man On Earth Shares Video For “Darkness Of The Dream”

Kristian Matsson of The Tallest Man On Earth has spent most of 2015 sharing new sides of both himself and his work. Not only was his excellent new album, Dark Bird Is Home, out now via Dead Oceans, a dynamic and revealing look into personal struggles, but it was also accompanied by a series of firsts: his first late night performance on Conan, his first daytime television performance on CBS This Morning, his first international tour with a full band, and now, his first music video that incorporates his dance skills. It’s for “Darkness of the Dream,” a favorite off Dark Bird Is Home, and a song that was not shared pre-release, making this beautifully crafted video all the more special. The film traces the footwork of a choreographed dance spliced with visions of a mossy forest and Matsson’s journey through a rocky valley. Jakob Wallin directed the video, while the cinematography was by Jesper Guldbrand.

WATCH // The Tallest Man On Earth Daytime Debut On CBS This Morning

“In his sold-out concert at the Beacon Theater on Wednesday, he used every inch of his long guitar cord to roam the stage: darting around, crouching, stretching, hip-twitching, perching briefly and jittering away, but always ending up back at the microphone when he had more words to sing. Which was often, because for all his hyperactivity Mr. Matsson is a guitar-slinger rooted in folk, and his songs are troubadour ballads at heart, carrying knotty, imagistic verses. . . And while his melodies could often be ballads, his guitar playing offers them no repose: It’s quick strumming or even faster fingerpicking, always pushing.”

— The New York Times

“’Dark Bird’ began with Matsson playing and singing alone and built to a rousing conclusion that brought a crowd who had listened in rapt attention all night to its feet, shouting approval. It was a fitting summary of one Man’s evolving musical journey.” — Washington Post

The Tallest Man on Earth’s North American tour in support of Dark Bird Is Home concluded with a run of vibrant sold out performances at Washington, D.C.’s Lincoln Theatre and New York’s Beacon Theatre and Music Hall of Williamsburg, plus a daytime television debut on CBS This Morning: Saturday. This past Saturday to early risers across the globe, Kristian Matsson and his five-piece band performed Dark Bird Is Home single, “Sagres,” and album opener “Fields of Our Home,” plus “Like The Wheel,” a favorite from 2010’s Sometimes the Blues Is Just A Passing Bird, for a web-exclusive. Following last month’s late night television debut on Conan, this was a wonderful way to end The Tallest Man’s first-ever full band tour, and it was clearly evident to the band and sold out rooms, this is merely the beginning of great things to come in support of this new record.

The Tallest Man On Earth’s Dark Bird Is Home is out now on Dead Oceans. The next North American run includes performances at Forecastle, Eaux Claires Festival, Newport Folk Festival, Lollapalooza, and MusicfestNW. All tour dates are below.

READ // Photographer Cameron Wittig Discusses Album Art For ‘Dark Bird Is Home’ From The Tallest Man On Earth Via Half-Past

DOC100full

Midwest photographer Cameron Wittig recently sat down with Half-Past to discuss the striking album cover on Dark Bird Is Home, the newest album from The Tallest Man On Earth (aka Sweden’s Kristian Matsson). What started as a ‘friendship birthed from a chance meeting, some friendly conversation, and copious Wisconsin wedding whisky’, the two met in 2014 at a felow musician’s country wedding. When the time came around for a new album cover, Matsson trusted Wittig to give a face to his new project. From the article (Which you can read in full here)-

“It was to be a photographic reinterpretation of stories that came out of discussions about the record and the recording process in Sweden. The figure of Dark Bird was born on a mountaintop near the town where Kristian lives. She may or may not be real. It doesn’t matter in the end, as she is more powerful as a specter, this beautiful figure of uncertainty and change.”

Primarily a portrait photographer, Cameron recruited the talents of a friend to be his model for the cover as they travelled around his neighborhood shooting on the steps of houses that felt just right.

“I asked her to stand on the steps of houses that I selected based on how they looked or felt. Nothing was planned ahead of time. We did maybe six or seven different houses in various ways. Some were fancy houses, some were not. A few were abandoned. But it was always this figure in an ambiguous stance. She looks like she could be returning; frozen in a moment of contemplation anticipating what might happen once she rings the bell. Or perhaps she’s leaving and taking one last look at what her life was before she leaves forever. I didn’t really decide what that was going to be.”
