On Fillmore

Once dubbed "the rhythm section's revenge" by Jim O'Rourke, On Fillmore is back with their most elaborate work, Extended Vacation. The duo is formed by bassist Darin Gray and percussionist Glenn Kotche, who were originally hand-picked by O'Rourke as the rhythm section for his album Eureka (Drag City, 1999) and joined him on several tours and his next two albums (Halfway to a Threeway and Insignificance). It was in 2000 during a gig at Scott Walker's Meltdown Festival in London while touring with O'Rourke that On Fillmore was conceptualized. Nearly a decade later, the band is stretching the very definition of the term "rhythm section."

On Fillmore Announce Select Dates For Summer

3hhs_onfillmore2_7It is all too rare that percussionist Glenn Kotche and bassist Darin Gray are able to convene for their On Fillmore project. Once dubbed “the rhythm section’s revenge” by Jim O’Rourke, Kotche and Gray traveled to Japan earlier this year, both to perform their own shows and and play in O’Rourke’s band. The duo’s moody November 2009 Dead Oceans debut, Extended Vacation, was celebrated by those who realized just how special an occassion it is when these two talents get together. The New York Times called the album, “a peculiar update of early-1960s exotica, with a heart of darkness in place of a setting sun,” and NPR’s Bob Boilen named Extended Vacation as one of his favorite albums of the fall.┬áSince the album’s release, Kotche and Gray have been engaged in sporadic but intense rehearsals, attempting to hone the subtle complexities of the album (which features exotic bird calls, marching band explosions and purring motors) into a robust live experience.

Petty’s film examines the comparison between filmmaking and voyeurism, within the context of underground fetish films. Hear a sample of On Fillmore’s music backing these disturbing images in the trailer below. For more info on “S&Man,” see the film’s IMDb page HERE.
