Kevin Morby

Singing Saw is a record written simply and realized orchestrally. In it, Kevin Morby faces the reality that true beauty – deep and earned – demands a whole-world balance that includes our darker sides. It is a record of duality, one that marks another stage of growth for this young, gifted songwriter with a kind face and a complicated mind.

Kevin Morby Shares “1234,” Chats with NPR Music

Yesterday, Kevin Morby hopped on the phone for a quick chat with NPR Music’s Bob Boilen to discuss “1234,” one of the more unusual songs off his forthcoming record, City Music (out 6/16). The chat about the short-and-sweet homage references the obvious name-drop of the Ramones, and how the song is a perfectly and condensed sentiment within the context of City Music. The album is a love letter to New York, its denizens and all their private and personal melodramas, and all the similar stories that reverberate in other cities across the world.

And believe us when we say that “1234” is an utterly catchy and wonderfully fitting tribute to the feeling of walking through city streets abuzz with energy, every corner packed full of stories.

City Music was also named Vinyl Me, Please‘s Record of the Month, which means the vinyl subscription service’s 20k+ subscribers will have an opportunity to get a limited edition, white/orange tie-dye vinyl accompanied by a 12-page lyric booklet and a 12×12 art print by Robbie Simon.

Also, Kevin has included another special treat for those who pre-order City Music directly from Dead Oceans. Since the record reflects upon the cities Kevin has visited and loved, Dead Oceans pre-orders will include “A Guide To The Cities That Inspired City Music,” a pamphlet that points to his favorite locations in Kansas City, New York City, and Porto, three locations especially close to his heart.

Finally, Kevin’s European tour begins tonight with a performance at Primavera Sound in Barcelona. Last week, Kevin debuted his new songs for a sold out crowd at Bowery Ballroom in NYC, check out a review and photos here. Coming soon to a city near you.

Vinyl, Me Please on selecting City Music:

City Music is Kevin Morby’s fourth LP as a solo performer, and it feels like it’s the one he’s been working towards this whole time; a breakthrough in form and quality 10 albums into his career as a sideman and solo performer, a feat that rarely happens in today’s go-go-go music economy. City Music has a black-and-white, well-worn feel and a sense that this artist has poured himself entirely into the project with all abandon, leading to an album that will stand sentry over the rest of his catalog. Picking City Music as Record of the Month – once we tucked ourselves comfortably into its environ – was an easy decision.

Kevin Morby Announces ‘City Music’ World Tour

City Music is an airplane descending over frozen lakes into Chicago. City Music is riding the Q Train out to Coney Island to smell the ocean and a morning in Philadelphia where great cranes reconfigure the buildings like an endless puzzle. City Music is a quiet afternoon moment on a bench in Baltimore, a highway in Seattle at night where the distant houses look like tiny flames and a bottle of red wine being drained on a bridge in Paris. City Music is a bus pulling into St. Louis at dawn where the arch looks like a metal rainbow reflecting the day’s early sunlight…

City Music is also the new album from Kevin Morby (out June 16th on Dead Oceans), and in it, he explores the cities of his past, present, and future. Today he announces the City Music World Tour, wherein his relationship with these cities across the globe continues to deepen and grow.

Kevin Morby Shares Video For New Song “Aboard My Train,” New Album ‘City Music’ Out 6/16

Today Kevin Morby has shared a video for “Aboard My Train,” the new single off his forthcoming album, City Music (out 6/16 on Dead Oceans). Kevin self-directed the video for his new song, “Aboard My Train.”

“I wanted to make a video at home, something sort of lo-fi,” he explains. “I kind of missed the challenge of having to come up with something creative with little to no money.” As for the song, Kevin had this to say: “Doing what I do, people are constantly coming in and out of your life. The moment you think you’ll never see someone again, they reappear and that’s what this song is about starting with my first best friend, Pablo, who lived on my street in Tulsa, and was my first memory of having a best friend.” In the video, Kevin writes the names of many of these people who have made lasting impressions on his life.
