Kevin Morby

Singing Saw is a record written simply and realized orchestrally. In it, Kevin Morby faces the reality that true beauty – deep and earned – demands a whole-world balance that includes our darker sides. It is a record of duality, one that marks another stage of growth for this young, gifted songwriter with a kind face and a complicated mind.

Kevin Morby & Waxahatchee Team Up for Two Jason Molina Covers

Kevin Morby & Waxahatchee, coming off a stellar 2017 with the release of critically acclaimed records (City Music and Out In The Storm, respectively), team up for an homage to Jason Molina on this digital 7”, covering two Molina classics from the artist’s critical and commercial zenith: “Farewell Transmission” off his monumental work Magnolia Electric Co. and “The Dark Don’t Hide It” off the critically acclaimed What Comes After The Blues. Proceeds from this release will go to the charity Molina himself had history with, MusiCares®. Morby talks about the collaboration below:

“My love for Jason Molina began only a few years ago. I had overlooked him for years, too overwhelmed by his many monikers and sprawling catalogue. Then on a European tour in 2016 our driver put on Magnolia Electric Company and my mind was blown – and so began my obsession with the man and his music. A few months after hearing him I was on tour with Waxahatchee where Katie and I bonded over our mutual love for Molina, and we got the idea to record two of our favorite Songs: Ohia songs – which is what you have here today; Farewell Transmission b/w The Dark Don’t Hide It.

These were recorded in Upstate New York with my live band at my drummer’s studio, The Chicken Shack, with both Katie and I splitting vocals duties. We would record all day, eating eggs from all the chickens running around, taking breaks to read old articles and watch live footage of Jason and his band. He’s a true inspiration and there’s no other songwriter or vocalist quite like him. We are deeply honored to be able to sing his songs, and we do hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed creating them. The cover art was done by William Schaff, who is responsible for the iconic Magnolia Electric Co. album art. All proceeds of the digital sales will go to MusiCares® – an organization that provides support and community services to musicians in need of medical, personal & financial assistance – and also helped Jason in his struggle with addiction, as well as paid to have a polyp removed from my vocal chords in 2014. A truly wonderful cause.”

Peace and Happy New Year,
Kevin Morby, 2018

Kevin Morby Contributes Cover of “Blue Christmas” for Amazon’s “Indie for the Holidays” Playlist

“Indie for the Holidays,” an Amazon Original Holiday Playlist, offers an sprawling range of artists covering holiday classics as well as contributing new, original songs. All songs are available exclusively now for streaming on Amazon Music through Amazon Music Unlimited and Prime Music. We’re pleased to announce that this year’s “Indie for the Holidays” includes a contribution from our own Kevin Morby.

Morby wraps up a banner year that saw the release of his widely-lauded fourth album, City Music, by offering his moody take on “Blue Christmas.” Premiering yesterday via Noisey, Morby’s “Blue Christmas” is sparse and longing, anchored by a slow-moving bass line, the kick beat of the drum, and Morby’s signature croon.

Of the song, Morby explained, “Kyle and I have spent Christmas together for the past two years, so I thought it appropriate to record a Chris Kringle jam with him in his home studio. On Christmas Day Kyle [Thomas, King Tuff] usually dresses like an elf and skips around and screams “Christmas!” Every five minutes or so. Christmas in LA is a funny thing, it’s usually about 65 degrees and sunny out so it always feels a little psychedelic that’s it’s actually Christmas day, after growing up in the Midwest where it usually snows, or at the very least is very cold. But there’s something special about celebrating the Holidays in the sun. Anyways Kyle and I chose “Blue Christmas” because I wanted to pretend I was Elvis for an afternoon, and we had a great time making it. Truth be told, the whole thing was a Christmas Miracle.

Kevin Morby Shares Two Versions Of New Song “Baltimore” Benefiting Believe In Music

Listen to/Purchase “Baltimore” on Bandcamp

Today, Kevin Morby has shared a new song, “Baltimore,” in two different iterations. “Baltimore (Sky At Night)” was recorded during the Singing Saw sessions, while “Baltimore (County Line)” was recorded during the City Music sessions. All proceeds from the sale of this digital single will benefit the local Baltimore non-profit Believe In Music. Below are statements from Kevin about both the song and the organization and why they are both dear to his heart, as well as a statement from Believe In Music.

Kevin Morby:

I love Baltimore. It is a city with a giant heart and has remained one of my favorite places to keep returning to on tour. It is unique and beautiful and you can’t mistake it for anywhere else in the world – Baltimore is one hundred percent Baltimore. All proceeds from both my and the label side will go to the Believe In Music education program, which provides “an innovative music education for Baltimore’s youth”. I do hope you enjoy both versions of the song and if you do decide to donate – thank you for contributing to what I believe to be a great cause.

I wrote Baltimore at the time I was conceiving both Singing Saw and City Music and recorded a version during both sessions with two different bands. I love the song dearly, but in the end thought that thematically it didn’t belong on either album, and thus have been waiting for this moment to release it as what it has always been meant to be – a single.

Believe In Music:

Believe in Music is so grateful to generous and talented Kevin Morby for the donation of proceeds from his new release, “Baltimore.” We feel strongly that both versions of the song reflect the character and unique vibe of Baltimore City. Having the support of successful, working musicians is incredibly meaningful for our students as they aspire to succeed through an education in music.

Kevin Morby Shares Video For “Downtown’s Lights” :: US Tour Begins Next Week

Today, Kevin Morby shares the stunning new video for the contemplative City Music standout “Downtown’s Lights.” Directed by Hugo Jouxtel and shot in Paris, the video – like that album – is a paean to the cities of the world, with the City of Lights taking center stage. Kevin offers the following insight into the video for “Downtown’s Lights”:

Paris has always shown a lot of love towards my music, and I am very grateful. On my first European solo tour I was selling maybe 50 tickets a city until I showed up in Paris and heard the show was already at 150 tickets, which at the time really blew my mind and took me by complete surprise. Before the show, a company called La Blogothéque asked me to do a “Take Away Show,” which I agreed to do, though I didn’t really know what it was. The film crew was so kind and took me on a magical adventure around the city filming me playing some songs in a park and in a boat going down the canal. Two years later, I was back in Paris and they asked me to film a show playing to a small crowd inside a house next to Père Lachaise Cemetery and that, too, was very magical. So when it came time to do a video for Downtowns Lights I knew just who to ask. La Blogothéque has a way of capturing the meeting of artists and a city half way, letting them both do the work and play off of each other and the result is always fascinating.
