Sound on the Sound has posted this lovely video of John Vanderslice, joined by Dianna Potter, singing “Convict Lake” and “D.I.A.L.O.” in the intimate haze of morning before catching a ferry out of Doe Bay. Don’t you wish you’d been there with some hot cocoa and a warm sweater? I sure do.
Catch John in San Francisco at The Dark Room Theatre on December 30!
Luz de Vida is a compilation album of music from artists both in Tucson and affiliated with Tucson. All proceeds from the sale of Luz de Vida will go to the Tucson Together Fund, the only officially sanctioned fund established to assist victims, families, and witnesses of the January 8th tragedy.
Luz de Vida – Spanish for Light of Life – is an expression of community, love, healing, grace and hope, a positive response from Tucson musicians and national artists who have a special bond with Tucson. Luz de Vida will be available in two formats: as a 37-track digital album and a special limited-edition 12-song vinyl release, with exclusively Tucson bands.
Our own John Vanderslice contributes a song to the compilation, joining an all-star ensemble that includes Spoon, Giant Sand, Calexico, Neko Case, Meat Puppets, Ozomatli, Robyn Hitchcock, and Chuck Prophet to name just a few.
Luz de Vida is compiled by Music Against Violence, a coalition of Tucson writers, recording engineers, and venue operators. This compilation will be available Oct. 18. You can find more info HERE.
Today NPR premiered the live video of John Vanderslice’s “Overcoat” from the White Wilderness recording sessions. JV, Minna Choi and her Magik*Magik Orchestra’s were filmed by Yours Truly at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California.
Click here to watch the video at NPR and read a bit more about JV’s experience, “That whole session was so challenging for me and so inspiring and thrilling that halfway through the first day, I thought this is the way I need to make records – this is it.”
John Vanderslice begins a nation-wide tour today, the majority of which is with Damien Jurado. JV has declared both April and May “Audience Participation Month” and has these words to share about the tour:
So, as you may have heard, April is Audience Participation Month. We kindly ask you to be part of our live show in one of the following ways.
- You can sing lead or harmony vocal on “Trance Manual”
- You can play a solo on “Exodus Damage” with an instrument of your choice, the weirder the better.
- You can trigger that cool squiggly sound in “Underneath The Leaves”.
- You can also choose your own adventure. Again, the stranger the better.
Email me with your awesome ideas.
NB: May is also Audience Participation Month.
The 6/17 concert at the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco will include instrumentation by 30 members of the Magik*Magik Orchestra.
