Bowerbirds

Bowerbirds' debut album, Hymns for a Dark Horse, was nearly one hundred percent focused on the thesis that the earth is a sacred place with merit beyond us, and that humans are just visitors here. Its contrapuntal harmonies documented a moment in the life of the songwriter and the life of the band — Beth Tacular and Phil Moore living in an airstream in rural North Carolina, building a cabin of reclaimed boards by hand in the woods — but did so without, as far as we could tell, delving into their lives at all. While these weren't protest songs, per se, they had the wry anger of a "Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll." The songs were interconnected, both musically and thematically, a musical whitepaper of the very best, most listenable kind.

Bowerbirds Announce Fall Tour Dates

Following the critically acclaimed release of Upper Air, Bowerbirds took their show on the road, touring relentlessly from the summer of 2009 to the Spring of 2010. After a few quiet months at home, Bowerbirds return to the road this fall for select dates. Starting at Hopscotch, their hometown music festival, they will take their live show to Texas and back.

Bowerbirds live performances are stunning, taking the intimacy of the recordings and translating them to the stage. Their sweet and subtle melodies can silence a room, capturing the grace and charm of their recordings perfectly. As the New York Times put it “folk bands from North Carolina don’t have the easiest time getting packed rooms of New Yorkers to turn silent. But Bowerbirds’ dulcet, string-filled folk songs gently cooed affairs about backyards and interstate highways– inspire a quiet, trancelike reverie.”

Watch the gorgeous video from “Northern Lights” below. Directed by Matt Amato, this video is an elegant visual accompaniment to the centerpiece of Upper Air.
